The Ryu Tips Story

A cue tip, pursued over time.

Ryu Tips begins with a focused question: how can one small part of the cue keep asking for attention? The journey follows the cue tip itself through observation, repeated return and continued work, with H, M and S forming the family seen today.

A product at the beginning

A small point of contact.

The story starts with the cue tip: the small part at the end of the cue that meets the cue ball. Ryu Tips cue tips are handcrafted in Japan using Japanese leather, keeping that point of contact at the centre of the work.

Its scale is easy to overlook. For Ryu Tips, that scale is the reason to stay close. The tip is where the cue reaches the ball, and its role should remain present without distracting from the game.

Earlier Ryu product notes emphasised the natural leather itself, including a no-added-colouring approach intended to avoid unnecessary hardening. The natural brown colour also made chalk on the tip surface easier to see.

The development journey

The work returns to the table.

The work developed by staying close to billiards as it is played. Watching games and tournaments, listening to conversations around the table and returning again to the cue tip kept the focus connected to use rather than abstract language.

The movement was iterative. A variation could be tried, compared, adjusted and brought back to the product. Earlier notes also describe attention to keeping the tip's condition consistent across changes in climate and humidity.

Earlier Ryu product notes describe a deliberately limited production approach focused on consistency and careful making. Persistence gives the wider rhythm its shape: observation leads back to the product, and the product leads back to the table.

    At the table.

Play gives the cue tip its setting. The work begins by watching where that small point belongs.

  2. 02

    Back to the product.

Use, comparison and adjustment bring attention back to the tip instead of away from it.

  3. 03

    Still in motion.

The next question remains close to the game as the family continues to take shape.

A point to return to

The work stays close to the cue tip.

The cue tip remains a small point of attention: the part at the end of the cue, close to the game and close to the work.

People and places

Learning travels with the game.

The Ryu Tips journey is also shaped by people. Learning from a mentor, travelling through the game and meeting others around billiards gave the product a human scale alongside its focused purpose and careful making.

Those encounters keep returning the attention to the cue tip. Routines, conversations and time around the table bring another way of seeing how a small product belongs within the game.

Travel is part of the same movement, carrying the work through new conversations and encounters around billiards. In each place, the product remains the point that brings the journey back together.

Where the journey leads

H, M and S.

H, M and S bring the journey to the Ryu Tips family seen today. H / Hard, M / Medium and S / Soft are the three names that give the focused product range a clear form.

Together, they offer a direct way to continue from the story into the product page: one cue-tip family, three names and the same attention that runs through the journey.

In the billiards conversation

The product story also has a place in the wider billiards conversation. CUE'S Vol.217, the March 2023 issue of the Japanese billiards magazine, included Ryu Tips in its Tips product section.

The photographed interior page presents the H, M and S family together. The cover gives the issue context, while the printed page shows the Ryu row beyond the Ryu Tips site.

The Ryu Tips world

A wider world, the same point of focus.

The wider Ryu Tips world still returns to the same family. H, M and S remain the visible form of a product story built around attention to the cue tip.
